The mind can be divided into two parts, conscious and unconscious (subconscious). The conscious mind is like the tip of the iceberg. The unconscious part is like the unseen bulk of the iceberg under water which contains all we have learned in our life. One of the main functions of the subconscious mind is to store memories, experiences, beliefs etc. In turn, our conscious mind can call on this information as required.
The subconscious is by far the greater and more powerful part of the mind and possibly the most powerful asset available to us. It works for free. It will work all night long. If given the right material it can produce amazing results in life.
Sigmund Freud used to say our conscious personality was little more than a puppet manipulated by the aims and purposes of the subconscious. Even doctors will openly admit that 70% of disease is created in the subconscious mind. Once material is stored in the unconscious mind, it is extremely difficult to change. This can be a good thing but oftentimes people store negative, limiting beliefs and mindsets that prevent them from being all they can be.
It used to be said that we were using 10% of our minds; now it is believed we are using as little as 1-3%. The mental movie making process we are about to describe is a simple and fun technique you can use to utilize more of your mind.
Mental Movie Making
The single best and most enjoyable way I know of utilising the power of the subconscious mind is to create a mental movie of the person youve become and life you see yourself as having before it has actually happened. A mental movie allows you to create a running picture of your life complete with all the visuals, sounds, associated emotions, tastes and smells. So, when you look inside your mind, this is what you see running all the time. Heres how to do it:
Step 1: Write down how you envision your life
This will become your new mental blueprint. Do this using the present tense describing in full detail everything using all the representation systems: Visual (seeing), Auditory (hearing), Kinaesthetic (emotional and physical perception), Gustatory (tastes) and Olfactory (smells).
Make sure you write down paragraph by paragraph what you see in your life, what you hear, what you feel both emotionally and physically, what you can taste and what you smell. Write it in the present tense so that you believe it is happening to you now which will ensure you become it. For what its worth, make this vision for your life as BIG as possible. Dont bother wasting time on smaller goals and visions. Its not important whether youre able to do that thing now. Give your mind a big, exciting, life-changing goal; it needs an exciting and compelling vision in order for your mind to respond to it.
Step 2: Relax all mental effort
To do this, find a suitable, quiet place to relax. You could lie down on a mat on the floor of your room or on your bed and relax your mind and body. It may help to buy a simple relaxation CD and play this in the background to induce a state of deep relaxation. For best effect, do this either just before you go to sleep at night or just when you wake up in the morning as this is when your unconscious mind is most impressionable. Strangely enough, relaxation and being energised go together as we tend to draw out our true nature in a relaxed state. Our true nature is usually covered by learned thinking, habits and programs.
Step 3: Install the program
In this relaxed state run the program (or mental movie) through your mind of what you created in step 1. Cycle through all the visuals, the sounds, the feelings, the tastes and smells that make up what you want to become. By essentially sensory overloading your mind, it will believe something has happened as an experience even if it hasnt already. As a result it will begin to behave and do things in accordance with the newly installed mental program.
Once you have completed this process, it is important to repeat steps 2 and 3 on a weekly if not daily basis.
The Missing Ingredient
Napoleon Hill, the author of the seminal book Think and Grow Rich, said: Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. The keyword here is believe. In creating your mental movie, theres no point installing it if you dont truly believe its gonna happen. You will fail if you cant sell the idea to your own mind and body. Every cell in your body must vibrate with excitement and the belief that its going to happen. There can be absolutely no doubt. If you believe without doubt, it will come about.
Most people go through life not utilising the immense power of their subconscious mind. Imprinting the right success-inducing programs on your subconscious mind is probably the single-most powerful ingredient in the recipe for success, above and beyond hard-work, education, skills etc . The programs or mental movies you have running inside your mind will dictate the outcome of your entire life. So make sure you like who you are becoming and what you see when you look inside your mind. Youre gonna think for the rest of your life, so you might as well do it well!
